An everyday practice during that
century consisted of blending the great wines of Bordeaux with a small
parcel of wine |
|
from the North of the Côtes-du-Rhône
region. The blend (denied a
vintge as it is classified as table wine) was made by |
|
choosing two lots seen as being
the most representative of the vintage’s characteristics.
These were then blended so |
|
that the wines maintained their
fundamental characteristics of smoothness, elegance, balance and
refinement. |

The wines produced from the
gentle slopes of the Cote d’Or are the greatest examples of the Pinot
Noir grape. Nowhere else has this |
|
variety reached the levels of
richness and complexity required to produce one of the world’s great red
wines. |

Inheriting a domaine like this,
as former architect Jean-Charles Le Bault de la Moriniere did from his
father Jean in |
|
1994 must be both a huge stroke
of good fortune and a grave responsibility: The 11hectares are all found
within |
|
Grand Cru Corton. Most are
planted with chardonnay, producing nuanced, finely detailed Corton
Charlemagne that |
|
unfold in time at a glacial pace,
there is also a little parcel of red Corton (a vineyard of Pinot Noir
surrounded by |
|
Chardonnay)
Bonneau du Martay produces the true steely sort of Corton
Charlemagne which are built to last. |

For over 250 years Chanson Père
& Fils, situated in the centre of Beaune, has been handcrafting wines
of high |

quality from all the great
appellations of Burgundy. Never forgetting the importance of tradition in
the making of |

their wines, Chanson handles each
individual vintage and plot quite separately in order to make wines that

DOMAINE DUJAC |
|
|
|
|
Given land prices in Burgundy
today, the creation of a fine domaine without benefit of inheritance seems
almost |
|
impossible. Almost. Jacques
Seysses managed, beginging in the mid 1960’s, and today this Morey based
domain |
|
has enviable 12ha, including
parcels in 5 Grands Crus. Seysses doesn’t use press-wines, keeps the
fermentation and |
|
cuvasion relatively cool, and
racks as often as necessary in order to get rid of savoury flavours - yet
he does (like his |
|
friend Aubert de Villaine at DRC)
use all the stems and he also uses new, lightly toasted wood. The result
is often wine |
|
of relatively pale colour and
soft texture, yet great depth, fruit and refinement. |

The top Pouilly Fuisse estate is
in a league of its own. This 30 ha domaine has been owned by the Vincent
family since |
|
1852 with Jean Jacques Vincent,
the present encumbent, aided by his daughter Benedicte. In spite of being
in the |
|
Macconnais, Chateau Fuisse makes
wines that rank with the greatest white Burgundies from the Cote d’Or.
Old wines, |
|
attentive vinification and ageing
in barrel, absolute dedication to quality: all contribute to wines of
great distinction |
|
and class. This is Pouilly Fuisse
at its best. |

DOMAINE DU
COMTE LIGER-BELAIR |
|
|
|
|
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is
a very recent domaine created at the beginning of the year 2000 by
Louis-Michel |
|
Liger-Belair, agricultural
engineer and oenologist, with those few parcels of vineyards remaining in
family hands. In |
|
reality, the domaine is not at
all recent ; Louis-Michel is renewing two hundred years of family
tradition dedicated to the |
|
vines and wines of Burgundy in
general, and to Vosne-Romanée in particular. |

DOMAINES LEFLAIVE |
|
|
|
|
Vincent Leflaive was the first
name to come to mind when speaking of white Burgundy in the 1970s and 80s. |
|
In the 1990s the domaine came
into the hands of his daughter Anne-Claude, who converted the vineyards to |
|
biodynamism.
Bottles from the premiers and grand crus of Puligny-Montrachet are
now among the most profound |
|
and concentrated of all white
Burgundies. |

the last 18 years, and acquired holdings in some superb terroirs. His

WILLIAM
FÈVRE |
|
|
|
William Fèvre is the godfather
of traditional Chablis and the most important proprietor in the Grand Cru
vineyards. |
|
It’s 40ha (average vine age 40
years) include 12ha of Premiers Cru and 16.3ha of Grand Crus: this is the
only |
|
domaine to own land in 6 of the 7
Grand Crus. Cool climate Chardonnay planted over limestone clay gives
wines |
|
with a green tinge, flavours of
minerals and stones, the ability to age for ten years, then more golden
touches of |
|
honey - only Chablis. |

The fresh |

HUGEL |

|
|
The first traces of the Hugel
family in Alsace can be traced back to the XVth century and is still in
the hands of Jean |
|
and his three sons Jean-Philippe,
Marc and Etienne. Hugel is one
of the regions largest land owners with over 120 |
|
hectares to its name. It was a
Pioneer in both legislative and practical sense of Vendage Tardive and
Selection des |
|
Grains Nobles wines, it has also
decided to have nothing to do with the Grand Cru systems, despite being
initially |
|
enthusiastic in principle.
Varietal wines occupy the first tier of quality ‘tradition,’ the
second ‘jubilee’ and the third |
|
and (finest) wines of particular
excellence appear under the Hommage a Jean Hugel banner. Vendage Tardive
and |
|
Selection des Grains Nobles Cuvée
are only made in great vintages. |

This may well be the most
beautiful wine region of France: with gentle rolling countryside dotted
with ancient fortresses, castles and elegant |
|
chateaux. Renowned mainly for its
white wines of Sauvignon (Sancerre and Pouilly) and Chenin Blanc
(Vouvray), the region is also home to |
|
many sparkling wines (Saumur),
easy drinking dry whites (Muscadet), Cabernet Franc (Chinon) and ever
increasing amounts of Pinot Noir. |

Marc Bredif is a highly respected
producer in Vouvray, which shares ownership with the de Ladoucette winery
in |
|
Pouilly Fumé. We recently showed
four Vouvrays from Marc Bredif during the Working with Wine seminars and
they |
|
were a revelation. |
|
They all showed great purity of
expression, with prodigious ageing potential, and they are an |
|
excellent example of what Chenin
Blanc can achieve. Complex
notes of flowers, quince, lanolin, apples, and citrus |
|
are all integrated in wines that
have refreshing acidity which aids their slow evolution. |

The Rhône Valley is divided into
two parts, North and South. This is due to both a variance in climate and
to a certain extent, the grape |
|
varieties grown. The Northern Rhône
only produces 5% of the total production of the valley. It is the home of
Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie and |
|
Condrieu.
The South is where the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are produced
as well as the Côtes-du-Rhône. The principal varieties |
|
are Syrah and Viognier to the
North, while Grenache, Mourvèdre and Roussanne dominate the South. |

Whenever Cornas comes to mind so
does Clape. This is the most
famous estate in Cornas... indeed it is the estate |
|
that single-handedly built a
reputation for the whole appellation.
This is a no-frills operation; no sign on the door, |
|
no fancy modern winery
equipement, no new oak, no ‘reserve’ cuvees, just great vineyards and
experienced, non- |
|
internventionist winemaking. |
|
|
|
|
Clape’s
Cornas is
deeply coloured,
full-bodied, with
a pwerful
tannic structure
and great
natural richness. |
|
Uncompromising when young, it
develops surprising charm with age, as well as outstanding complexity and
intensity. |
|
‘Renaissance’, from younger
vines, is similarly styled but reveals its charms quicker. |

The neck labels of Chave bottles
display the phrase “Vignerons de Pere en Fils depuis 1481” (vignerons
from father to |
|
son since 1481).
When Gerard Chave took over from his father in the 1970’s, the
wines he produced became highly |
|
sought-after.
Now with his son, Jean-Louis (the name appears every second
generation), he continues to make firm, |
|
fine, long-aging Hermitage.
The secret is in the old vines located in seven different vineyard
sites or climats, which are |
|
vinified separately and blended
astutely. |

Rene Rostaing has been a vigneron
since 1971, when he began with just 0.5ha of Côte-Rôtie vines. |
|
|
sustain a living from this modest
holding, he established a successful sideline in real estate, which
continues to |
|
this day to pay the bills and
finance his real passion, fine winemaking.
Rene is not only passionate, but also very |
|
fortunate:
in 1990 he inherited 3.5ha of outstanding vineyard from his
father-in-law, Albert Dervieux-Thaize; then |
|
in 1993, he received yet more of
the best old vine plantings in the appellation, this time from Marius
Gentaz- |
|
Dervieux, his wife’s uncle. The
result is that he now possesses perhaps the finest selection of top
vineyard holdings |
|
in all Côte-Rôtie, including
the cream of what were formerly two of the best estates in the Northern Rhône. |
|
‘super-inheritance’ is in
good hands: Rene Rostaing is a dedicated and conscientious grower, who
respects his old |
|
vines, and keeps yields below
Grand Cru Burgundy levels. Vinifications
combine traditional and modern techniques |
|
- destemming where appropriate,
long cuvaisons with autopigeage, controlled use of new barrels and a
predilection |

for 600 litre demi-muids’,
which according to Rene give the ideal exposure of fruit to oak.
Single-vineyard cuvees |

are bottled separately when their
quality and individual terrior-inspired character justify such special
treatment; in |
|
less good years, they are blended
into the generic cuvee, to keep quality at the highest level.
The whole range is |

consistently exceptional, making
this one of the most prestigious wine estates not only in the Rhône, but
in all France. |

No estate in the Southern Rhône

Pleasing aromas of blackberry,
boysenberry and purple orchid. Nicely defined mid-palate with notes of
black cherry, black plum and |
|
currant.
Youthful, elegant tannins, balanced
acidity and nice use of oak. A
touch of bitter chocolate in the finish. Graceful and
very |

classy.

Weingut Bernhard Ott is a family
owned company since 1889. Bernhard is the fourth generation of the Ott
family and has been leading |
|
the winery since 1995.
The vineyards cover about 18ha in Feuersbrunn in the region Wagram
in lower Austria. Ninety
percent of the |
|
vineyard is planted with Grüner
Veltliner which is available in different strengths.
The Philosphy of Bernhard Ott is important:
wine |
|
should be true to its nature; his
wines are natural and fruity. This is also shown in the vinification:
fermentation in stainless steel tanks |
|
and bottled with stelvin screw
cap closures. |

Hungary’s legendary Tokaji, or
Tokay, has a long and distinguished history.
Botrytis Cinerea, the so-called noble rot, was recognised in |
|
this picturesque region of
northeastern Hungary by 1650, a full 100 years before it was identified in
Germany. Its effect was
dramatic: |
|
as Jancis Robinson noted in the
Oxford Companion to Wine, “By the 18th century, this extraordinary wine
was known to the French |
|
court, and was subsequently
introduced to the Russian imperial court by the Hapsburgs.
Only Constantia from the Cape of Good of |
|
Hope rivaled Tokay as ‘the wine
of kings and the king of wines’ during this period of sweet wine
worship, with Tokay Essencia regarded |
|
as an all-purpose restorative.”
Having fallen into disrepute under the communist regime, Tokay may
today be, as Michael Broadbent |
|
put it, “the least known of the
great classic European wine regions.” |

The re-emergence of the legendary
golden sweet whites of Tokaji, after decades of grey state control, show
why these |
|
wines were once considered as
‘greats’ along with Bordeaux, Burgundy, Sauternes, Port and Champagne.
The other |
|
members of that exclusive club
are the great German sweet whites which Tokaji most closely resembles. |

ANTINORI |
|
|
|
|
One of the oldest winemaking
firms in the world, Antinori first commenced producing wines in Tuscany in
and |
|
around Florence in 1385. They
have since led the charge of Chianti producers in establishing the image
of great |
|
Chianti and have contributed
significantly to the Renaissance of Italian wines. The majority of the
Antinori vineyards |
|
are located in Chianti Classico,
where all efforts are centred on viticulture, with the aim of achieving
Antinori’s |
|
objectives to maximise the
undiscovered potential in winemaking whilst safeguarding the wealth of
tradition, culture |
|
and taste which gives Antinori
wines their true identity. |

The winery released its first
vintage in 1992, and soon began receiving praise and accolades from wine
enthusiasts |
|
worldwide for its rich,
full-bodied wines. Indeed, in just five short years, its Redigaffi (100%
Merlot) had achieved cult- |
|
like status, receiving
outstanding ratings from the world’s most prestigious wine critics and
publications. Wine critic |
|
Robert M. Parker Jnr called the
1999 Redigaffi “as close to perfection as a wine can get.” The next
year, he gave the |
|
2000 Redigaffi a perfect 100
score. The winery’s Bordeaux
blend, Giusti di Notri, also garners near-universal praise. |
|
Little wonder that Tua Rita’s
wines are considered among the most difficult to find in Italy. |

“In Life Beyond Lambrusco,
Nicolas Belfrage said Isole was one to keep an eye on’.Observers who
took this advice |

might almost have been blinded by
the meteoric rise since that time of this estate of 45+ hectares of
vineyard. |
|
has become almost an emblem of
modern style, high quality Chianti Classico, nay Tuscan wine - indeed
Isole would |
|
probably be included in most
peoples top 10 in Italy. Paolo

Formerly Campo di Sasso, this is
a joint venture between Lodovico and Piero Antinori, located in the hills
of Bibona, on |
|
the border of the appellation of
Bolgheri. Ludovico created the
famous Bolgheri Estate of Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia in the |
|
80’s before selling it a few
years ago. Piero, the icon
vintner of Tuscany created the concept of Super Tuscan wines in |
|
the 70‘s his reds, Tignanello
and Solaia with Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Syrah |
|
and small offerings of Petit
Verdot. Tenuta di Biserno produces two wines at present, Insolglio and Il
Pino which will be |
|
followed by two additional wines
in the future. |

The most famous wines of this
north-eastern province are both unique and distinctive. Much great wine
and plenty of delicious ‘economy’ |
|
models are produced from Cabernet
(and the other Bordeaux varieties) in temperate parts and the same for
Pinot Grigio further to the |
|
cooler North. But the most
individual wines are from the West where the whites, Garganega and
Trebbiano combine in the wonderful food |
|
wine Soave. Corvina is the basis
for the famous Valpolicella reds including the fascinating and
concentrated Amarone wines. |

Italy’s northeast corner is the
country’s one region where white wines regularly rise to high
international standards |
|
and dominate production. The
region of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene has a faintly alpine feeling. Its local
specialty is |
|
the Prosecco grape which lends
itself well to sparkling wine production. La Riva Dei Frati owes its name
to where its |
|
vineyards are situated - a
forgotten abbey on a steep slope. Owned by the Adami family, La Riva dei
Frati combines |
|
antique traditions with modern
technology, aspiring to the production of the best wine possible. |

One of the earliest Pioneers of
quality Valpolicella was Giovanni Allegrini, who purchased the La Grola
hill in Sant |
|
Ambrogio for the purpose of
producing fine cru wines with new methods of planting and vinification.
His work has been |
|
carried forward famously by sons
Walter (vineyards), Franco (winery) and daughter Marilisa (Sales/ PR). All
their wines |
|
are from grapes grown in their
own vineyards situated in the communes of Fumane and Sant Ambrogio.
Allegrini are, |
|
and will remain leaders of the
modernist school in Valpolicella. |

village of S. Lorenzo, between
the Slovenian border to the North and the right bank of the Isonzo river
to the South. The |
|
vineyards are planted in a small
plateau of calcareous gravel that had been carried down by water after the
glaciers of |

the Eastern Alps.
The climate favours slow ripening, resulting in fleshier, better
balanced grapes, rich in flavour. |

The Middle East is known to be
the place where people first made wine in ancient times.
Certainly not the centre |
|
of the wine world these days, but
presided over by Lebanon’s indomitable Serge Hochar of Chateau Musar.
Even |
|
through Lebanon’s long Civil
War, he has managed to make famously long lived dry reds from Cabernet
Sauvignon |
|
and Cinsault that have thrown
many options games into turmoil. Hochar was Decanter Magazine’s first
ever ‘Man |
|
of the Year’. |
