Our museum wines are kept at the BEST cellaring conditions we know of. I have taken
a digital to show you the control panel. At 12.5 deg Celsius constant, humidity
53 to 55, 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year, Grange will keep 50 years plus.
My advise for those who may compare prices over the web, make a careful check as to
the condition the wines are kept in, present and past. Having been the same owners
since 1976(26years), we know and lived with our wines, whereas other older wines
maybe bought on the secondary market for re-sale, and who knows how and where they
were stored and more importantly, under what temperature variations. Grange stored
in uncontrolled space, has a failure rate of 50% in Canberra, 75% in Brisbane.
That is an easy way to tear up good $$$$$.
You can mix single bottles from this Museum wine list with other wines your are buying
so long as the 12 bottles per case prevails.

 The estate’s flagship offering, the 2002 Shiraz Graveyard, is a tightly-knit, 
 concentrated effort from a vineyard in the Hunter Valley planted on red clay 
 with 34-year-old vines. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by elegant 
 aromas of plums, blackberries, vanilla, and briery, wild mountain fruit. 
 This well-built, muscular Shiraz should hit its plateau of maturity in 
 2-3 years, and last for 12-15.

 The 2003 Shiraz Graveyard is richer, fuller, and more complete than its 
 older sibling. Aged in 80% French and 20% American oak, it exhibits a dense

 licorice, and dried herbs. Spicy, long, and rich, with an open-knit 
 texture, it can be drunk now or cellared for 10-12 years.

 The 2002 Shiraz Rayner was aged in 80% American and 20% French oak 
 (new and one-year-old). It is a streamlined, tightly-knit, ruby/purple-hued 
 effort displaying notes of blackberries, charcoal, dried herbs, sweet 
 cherries, and hints of figs and vanillin. More opulent in the mouth 
 than its bouquet suggests, it offers attractive, well-defined flavors 
 in a medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic style. It should age nicely 
 for 7-8 years.

 a full-bodied, massive Cabernet with beautifully integrated wood,

 sweet tannin, and a long finish. This superb, elegant 1982 has achieved

 It is rare to find a complex New World Viognier, but Clonakilla's 2004
 is a light to medium-bodied, fresh effort with steely litchi nut and
 peach-like scents. A terroir-based Viognier with loads of acidity as 
 well as freshness, it should be consumed over the next 1-2 years. 
 Distinctive, singularly-styled wines displaying abundant minerality 
 along with striking aromatics, and nicely delineated, powerful but 
 elegant flavours are the rule of thumb at this winery.

 Three hundred cases of this sexy, ostentatious wine made from 95% 
 Shiraz and 5% Viognier were produced. With a dark ruby/purple color, 
 full body, and an explosive bouquet of black fruits and Viognier's 
 apricot/peach component, this dense, structured, pure, concentrated 
 wine is reminiscent of a French Cote Rotie as well as the Australian 
 Shiraz/Viognier blend made by the Torbreck winery. 
 Drink it over the next decade.

 Elegant as well as complex and fragrant is the 1999 Shiraz/Viognier. 
 Only 5% Viognier is in the blend, but it is apparent in the aromatics, 
 which offer up telltale blackberry and cassis, but also a touch of apricot 
 and white flowers. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with supple texture, 
 silky tannin, and a fleshy, moderately weighty feel. Already delicious, 
 it is best drunk over the next 4-5 years.

 Remarkably, the 2000 Shiraz/Viognier (94% of the former and 6% of the latter) 
 is a dark ruby-colored, smoky effort with medium to full body, but a lean, 
 hard finish. While it is a more ambitious example, with more noticeable 
 oak than the Hilltops, the latter effort possesses more charm and character. 
 The 2000 Shiraz/Viognier should drink well for 10+ years

 Sexy, exotic, and open-knit with a savory, expansive mouthfeel is the 
 Burgundian-like 2004 Shiraz/Viognier. Soft, supple, and seductive, 
 it reveals honeyed notes in the nose along with blackberry, cassis, 
 and floral characteristics. This finesse-filled, hedonistically as 
 well as intellectually satisfying Australian red should be drunk 
 over the next 5-6 years. Distinctive, singularly-styled wines displaying

 The 1998 The Dead Arm Shiraz (from a vineyard planted prior to 1890) is outrageously 
 rich, spectacular stuff, the likes of which only Australia seems capable of making. 
 Whiners may complain that it is too big, too rich, too flavourful, and too damn good, 
 but this opaque purple-coloured offering is loaded with blackberry liqueur, smoke, 
 charcoal, pepper, cassis, and licorice. Unctuously-textured and full-bodied, but 
 neither heavy nor overbearing, the wine's sweet tannin and low acidity are hidden 
 in the cascade of fruit and glycerine that melt on the palate. This riveting, 
 compelling effort can be drunk now, but promises to age well for two decades or more.

 After re-tasting the 2002 The Dead Arm Shiraz, I believe my initial rating is 
 correct. It still plays it close to the vest, exhibiting loads of cassis, asphalt,

 well-made and impressive, it remains backward and restrained, and does not appear 
 to be up to the quality of either the 2003 or the great 2001.

 blackberries, and creme de cassis. Supple-textured and opulent, with pepper, licorice,
 and blackberry liqueur-like flavours, this beautiful wine is made in a modern,

 impressive red offering an exotic nose of lychee nuts, honeysuckle, apricot 
 marmalade, blackberries, and cassis. Expressive, full-bodied, and soft, but more 
 superficial than usual, it is a flamboyant effort to drink over the next 5-7 years.

 liqueur, creme de cassis, creosote, and vanilla. This voluptuous, layered, 
 opulent Cabernet is a full-throttle, Australian version of a French Pomerol. 
 The finish lasts for 50+ seconds. Still primary/youthful, with tremendous upside 
 potential, it can be drunk now, but should be even better in 4-5 years. It will 
 last for 12-15 years, possibly longer

 Elderton has gotten better over recent years in integrating the wood into their

 to full body, moderate tannin, and a chunky/chubby character, it should age nicely 
 for 7-8 years.

 spectacular aromas of toasty oak, camphor, blackberry liqueur, and asphalt. It is 
 humongous in the mouth, decadently rich, and luxuriously fruited, with a viscous

"The South Australian superstar winery is owned by Michael and Annabelle Waugh,
both unassuming, humble people who are trying to produce the finest wines
possible from absurdly low yields of their dry-farmed vineyard. The consulting
winemaker is the renowned Chris Ringland of Three Rivers. While there is a
tendency to think these are over the top, big wines, they are hand-crafted,
distinctive efforts that possess extraordinary definition, soul, and personality.
The Waugh's pay meticulous attention to every detail in the vineyard as well as
the wines upbringing. Everything is destemmed, fermented in open-top masonary
fermenters, the young must pushed through an old basket press, and the wine is
aged in a combination of new and neutral French and American hogsheads (small foudres).

 as austere tannin in the short finish. Nevertheless, it is a competent, but 
 expensive effort.

 remains very young at ten years of age. Made from 15-year-old vines with 
 yields of 1.5 tons of fruit per acre, it offers beautiful sweet black 
 currant fruit interwoven with notions of cherries, road tar, cedar, and 
 spice box. It would be interesting to insert this classic, top-flight 
 Cabernet Sauvignon in a blind tasting of the finest Bordeaux. A beautiful 
 full-bodied texture and sweet tannin suggest it will keep for 10-15 years.

 Since availability is extremely restricted, I’ll keep my notes brief for 
 the limited production (approximately 60 cases), perfect 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon 
 Roennfeldt Road. It is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon made from a 60-year-old 
 vineyard that spent three years in neutral French oak. The wine possesses 
 the concentration of the greatest classics ever produced in such Bordeaux vintages 
 as 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, and 1982. This is a full-bodied red with a finish 
 that lasts well over 60 seconds. For its size and concentration, it is, 
 surprisingly, not heavy, just super-endowed. The Cabernet Sauvignon needs 
 2-3 more years of cellaring, and should drink well for two decades. 
 Unfortunately, quantities are extremely limited for this spectacular, 
 world-class Australian red.

 blackberries, cassis, pen ink, graphite, incense, and acacia flowers. 
 The finish lasts well past a minute. Although not the most powerful 
 Shiraz (15.5% alcohol), to my mind it is the best of this portfolio, and 
 is superior to the limited production, super-duper expensive Roennfeldt cuvees.

 The nearly perfect 1997 Shiraz Roennfeldt Road boasts a dense opaque purple color 
 in addition to celestial aromas of blackberry liqueur, melted road tar, truffles, 
 and earth. It is full-bodied, with massive layers of fruit and glycerine that 
 cascade over the palate in a seamless, beautifully balanced fashion, and a 55-second 
 finish. This enormous wine is fabulously young with its entire future ahead of it. 
 It should hit its peak in 3-4 years, and last for two decades.

 The 1998 Shiraz Roennfeldt Road (235 cases) is made from yields of .75-1 ton of 
 fruit per acre. The wine possesses the concentration of the greatest classics 
 ever produced in such Bordeaux vintages as 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, and 1982. 
 This is a full-bodied red with a finish that lasts well over 60 seconds. For 
 its size and concentration, it is, surprisingly, not heavy, just super-endowed. 
 The Shiraz is accessible, but still primary. Unfortunately, quantities are 
 extremely limited for this spectacular, world-class Australian red.

 There are 236 cases of the 1999 Shiraz Roennfeldt Road (also from 65-year-old vines). 
 Although it pushes ripeness to the limit, it does not reveal any raisiny/pruny 
 characteristics. It offers wonderful freshness, good acidity, superb intensity, 
 and copious quantities of blackberry, cassis, crushed rock, floral, and spicy new 
 oak notes. Massive and concentrated with perfect equilibrium, it can be drunk now 
 and over the next 25 years. Kudos to one of the world’s finest wine producers!
 If I had to select the number one Australian winery, it would be hard not to choose 
 the Greenock Creek Winery, run by the humble, shy Michael and Annabelle Waugh. 
 The quality that emerges from this estate is extraordinary. In short, these are 
 thrilling, world-class wines that are about as compelling as wine can be.

 Other than the top cuvees of Penfolds' Grange, and the old vine 
 Grenache and Astralis from Clarendon Hills, no Australian wines are 
 richer than these offerings from Henschke - a winery that gets my 
 nod as one of Australia's two or three finest producers. Each of 
 these wines coats the mouth with glorious levels of jammy fruit, 
 extract, glycerin, and silky tannin. They are all dense ruby/purple-coloured, 
 full-bodied, and capable of lasting at least a decade, and in the case 
 of the 1991 Shiraz Hill of Grace, possibly 20+ years.
 The 1991 Shiraz Hill of Grace Keyneton Vineyard is the most backward 
 of the Henschke wines, with an earthy minerality, and explosive black 
 fruits the likes of which are often seen in northern Rhone Valley wines 
 made from ancient vines. This huge, broodingly backward, muscular, brawny, 
 immensely concentrated yet formidably endowed wine requires another
 4-5 years of cellaring; it should keep for 15-20 years. These are awesome 
 examples of what Australia is capable of producing.

  REVIEWED OCTOBER 2005.: Nose revealed leather and spice, deep and rich with the
 colour a dense brick red. The palate was dark chocolate with rich berries and
 firm tannins and fresh acid still very evident.  Will age still further and
 lingering length. Superb drinking to the last drop of the bottle. We were
 extremely pleased this wine has been cellared at 12.5 deg C, and the cork as
 you can see has NIL staining and full bottle.
 VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED at 11 years of age.

 A knock-out red, the 2000 Shiraz Mt. Edelstone reveals a brooding purple 
 color, great intensity, and tremendous power yet overall there is a sense 
 of restraint as well as admirable purity of character. No wimpish effort, 
 it is a layered Shiraz that builds incrementally across the palate, offering 
 expansive blackberry, earthy, peppery notes with smoke and wood in the background. 
 This cuvee, produced from an 86-year old vineyard in the northern sector of 
 Eden Valley, will be even better with 2-3 more years of bottle age; it will last 
 for 12-15 years

REVIEWED OCTOBER 2005: Another example of a great wine kept at the best cellaring possible.
 We enjoyed this wine with two of our favourite people at one of Canberra's top restaurants.
 Even the restaurateur was asked to participate. The most common word used was "smooth" and
 from one, "the smoothest wine he had ever drunk". The wine is now 14 years old and has
 developed magnificent aged characters and in sheer balance. We all drooled over every
 controlled sip. Aged berry bouquet, chocolate and berry velvet palate, fresh and alive
 with ever lingering mouthfilling moreish flavours you never wanted to cease. We all agreed
 it was an experience many would never ever know. Aged wines are a life filling experience

 The 2001 Shiraz RWT reveals an attractive dense ruby/purple-tinged 
 color as well as an earthy, plum, cherry, and peppery-scented bouquet, 
 medium to full body, and slightly intrusive acidity. The fruit and weight 
 are such that the acidity is only a minor annoyance as opposed to dominating 
 the wine’s character and compressing its texture. While acceptable, it 
 could have been a lot better. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

 (Barossa) offering that typically spends 14 months in a combination

 black cherries, and licorice, this spicy, rich, medium-bodied, elegant 
 2002 should drink well for 10-12 years.

REVIEWED OCTOBER 2005. Cork had almost nil staining - 1/8 to 1/4 inch, great.
 Distinctive berry , spice, white pepper and one would expect a class wine to follow.
 Lovely sweet wood, very youthful, robust but well balanced with extreme good length,
 definitive white pepper finish which lingered sip by sip over a long evening.
 Not many consumers get the chance to experience superbly aged reds.
 When you taste a well cellared wine, you would not be paying $30 for current release.

 at 12.5 degrees C. and 55% humidity, and is in pristine condition.
 The full and complex palate had ripe Shiraz flavours, integrated oak tannins
 and a well balanced finish when initially tasted, vanillin oak complexity and
 a fine backbone of tannin was coupled with soft, mouthfilling fruit flavour,
 to provide a long, lingering finish. In 2000, this wine, a preferred Vintage,
 displayed a powerfully concentrated palate with dark berry/aniseed flavours and
 velvet textured tannins.

REVIEWED OCTOBER 2005:-  14.5% Al. Bottle at full level as this wine has been in perfect
cellaring since release to us. Check the cork - perfect.
We allowed the wine to breathe for a half hour after opening with superb results. The
nose opened and had all the nuances of chocolate, black berries. No need to decant,
did not throw any sediment. With air it opened like a flower. Palate was like smooth
velvety chocolate and sweet berries. Tannins not predominant but there to give a perfect
balance. Flavours just linger on, clean dry finish - still many years of bottle age
in the present cellar.. Moreishness 6/6.
