 Tasted at a trade tasting and later that evening was asked of all 
 the wines on show, what was the standout? We chose Dr Roger Harris
 '06 Shiraz from the Canberra region - a cool climate success.
 Our first impression - a glass of silk.
  Fine tannins and pepper spice, nothing of the cloying heavy reds - refined 
 & delicate, reminiscent of the very best Adelaide Hill shiraz. 
 We gave it a Moreish factor of 6/6, it has our 
 HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION and a fantastic price.
 "This is an absolutely wonderful wine and the sort of wine 
 you can enjoy too many glasses of too easily. Dr Roger Harris 
 of Brindabella Hills crafts elegant perfectly balanced shiraz 
 from his vineyard near Hall ACT. Ther are clove, pepper and 
 allspice aromas with a soft palate of red berries and plums, 
 fine tannins finish the picture perfectly. It's easily one of 
 the best shiraz from our region".

Chalkers Crossing Winemaker wins QANTAS Medal 
as young Australian Winemaker of the Year

Celine Rousseau was born in Paris and trained in Bordeaux. Celine's winemaking 
experience in Champagne, Bordeaux and Languedoc in France and Margaret River 
and the Perth Hills in Western Australia combines traditional and modern techniques. 
Her skill has been recognised with the award of the QANTAS Medal for most promising 
young Australian winemaker for 2002 and is reflected in the success of 
Chalkers Crossing wines. Even though the wines speak for themselves, here is a

 Charlie Melton's Shiraz is in a class by itself. A quiet rasp of 
 extract when first poured, this black wine reserves its fruit 
 completely within its tannin. With air, that tightness opens into 
 vast quantities of flavour, not just simple fruit, but intensity 
 and drive without weight. The vines that create these grapes range 
 from 20 to more than 100 years old, and the blend includes all the 
 pressings -  remarkable balance.

 Rich savoury entry into the mouth which leads to some sweet 
 berried flavours. Reasonably firm tannins and quite a degree of 
 complexity. A lovely sweet/spicy nose with a degree of high quality

CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY 2007 Shiraz  (rrp15) ....$13.75...
The grapes were all grown in the university’s vineyards in Orange, 
a premium cool-climate region. The nose is spicy, featuring white 
pepper and dried herbs, along with ripe berry fruit flavours.  
These berry flavours are also evident on the palate, which is 
supported by subtle, well-integrated oak and a firm, fine tannin 
finish.  The result is a wine that goes very well with savoury pasta, 
or with grilled meats.  The tannins and acidity provide a firm 
backbone that complements but is not overwhelmed by food.

 The opaque purple-coloured, peppery, black currant, and blackberry-scented
 Shiraz Hilltops is structured and meaty with terrific stuffing.
 Surprisingly light for such a concentrated, intense wine, it is somewhat

 following decade.

 The epitome of a classic, excellent colour, soft fruit, 
 fine fine tannins all marries to a palate of perfection. 
 A small sip engulfs the front to back sensory and the length goes on and on.

 My kind of wine.  Lovely mix of ripe elegant flavour and smart oak, 
 the perfume and style of it both delicious and enchanting.  This is 
 a wine distinguished by its complex, elongated, integrated tannin, 
 by its fresh acidity, by its easy length of flavour.  It tastes of 
 spice, cherries, plums and musk, and after decanting it for an hour 
 or so, a bottle of this then disappeared in a flash.

 d'Arenberg d'Arrys Original Shiraz Grenache 2003 94 points $19.95
 d'Arry Osborne was the first to give grenache and shiraz grenache wines the 
 standing they deserved, lighting the fire in 1961. Bright and clear in colour, 
 the fragrant bouquet bursts into full-throated song on the light to 
 medium-bodied palate with a glorious mix of spice, raspberry and blackberry fruit.

 06 won Gold Medal (Top of Class) at  2007 Royal Queensland Wine Show  

 The Laughing Magpie is a blend and style that has its roots once 
 again in the Rhône Valley in ‘Cote Rôtie’, where Viognier is grown 
 alongside the Shiraz in the vineyards and hence picked and vinified 
 together to create a highly perfumed red wine.
 d’Arenberg has taken this idea and produced its own variation on this 
 marriage of red and white grapes and with a uniquely McLaren Vale twist, 
 has produced a wine with a fragrance of flowers combined with ripe, 
 spicy Shiraz characters. As with all d’Arenberg wines, gentle and traditional 
 winemaking processes are employed. Ripe bunches of Shiraz and Viognier were 
 gently crushed by the ‘Demoisy’ open –mouthed, rubber toothed crusher, before 
 fermentation together in the headed down open fermenters. The still fermenting 
 juice was then transferred using the peristaltic action of our must pump to 
 be basket pressed by our ‘Coq’ and “Bromley and Tregoning’ presses, followed 
 by 12 months maturation in American and French oak barriques, before bottling 
 on site

 Since returning from Spain I have been working on my 
 preliminary 2001 Dutschke blends.
 It was wonderful to arrive home and pull a bung on a 
 barrel and taste some big juicy Barossa Shiraz again.
 I had spent too much time away from home and too much 
 time away from great red wine.
 The wines are looking terrific. Big colour and flavours 
 with fullness, roundness and soft tannin extraction. 
 The 2001 vintage was a real good one for us. The plan 
 is to finalise blends before the end of January and 
 bottle in February.
 The release of the 2001’s will take place during May 2003, 
 as we always prefer to leave the wine recover after 
 bottling for a at least 8-10 weeks. The new vintage 
 Dutschke wines start appearing in the market place during 
 the month of May before the cold weather sets in. 
 It’s always nice to snuggle up with a full-bodied red 
 during the winter!

 Always modelled along Baroque (old fashioned word that today would mean - big 
 is beautiful baby) lines is very lavish wine. The nose is deeply flavour-
 ed -plums, blackberries-but still a bit closed. The palate, on the other hand
 ain't holding back. Rich & chocolaty, it's already integrating well. While it 
 oozes richness, the finish is fresh and lively. Full-on grandiose drinking now  
 but 3-5 years in the cellar will see more Barossa magic evolve.

Intense red with youthful purple hues. Fresh cherry and raspberry
fruit aromas revealing an underlying spicy white pepper character, 
complexed with a deeper, richer cassis red berry aroma. The palate 
flavours follow on well from the aroma, displaying abundant rich red 
berry characters from the Grenache and complex spicy/peppery flavours 
from the Shiraz.. Fine fruit tannins and youthful acid complete the flavour 
package with the Mourvedre providing a firm backbone to this classic 
South Australian blend.

The colour is deep and rich with distinct purple hues. The aroma 
is sophisticated and complex. Restrained use of oak has allowed 
the vibrant red berry fruit and liquorice to come forward on the 
aroma and continue through onto the well balanced and structured 
palate. The mid palate is well filled out with clean fleshy fruit and 
subtle use of oak has added complex creamy vanilla and fine 
underlying tannins.

 The  Glaetzer  philosophy  focuses simply  on the production 
 of small-volume, super premium wines.
 Glaetzer Grenache (51%) / Mourvèdre (49%) is produced from dry-grown grapes of 
exceptional quality in the renowned Ebenezer district of the north western 
Barossa Valley. Handpicked at optimal maturity the fruit was fermented on skins 
to attain the rich red hues characteristic of premium Grenache blends. The final 
stages of fermentation were completed in seasoned American oak hogsheads, resulting 
in the development of a soft palate with intense depth of flavour complimented 
with subtle oak tannins. The wine is balanced and complex, Grenache contributing 
flavour and spice, the Mourvèdre adding colour and structure. Superb at release

'The Bishop' Shiraz is made from fruit of dry grown vines in the Ebenezer district 
in the north west of the Barossa Valley. The wine was fermented and then aged in 
seasoned American and French oak hogsheads(300L barrels) for 18 months . An intensely flavoured and powerful wine that will reward 
extended cellaring.


GLAETZER 2004 Shiraz Barossa Valley       ....$SOLD ...
 The fruit for the Glaetzer Shiraz is sourced from the Ebenezer District in the northwest 
 Barossa Valley. The vines are over 80 years old and extremely low yielding, crops rarely 
 exceeding 1 tonne per acre. Picked at optimum ripeness the grapes were fermented in open 
 top vats before completing fermentation in American oak puncheons(500L barrels). 18 months 
 maturation in oak has allowed superb flavour integration prior to blending and bottling.
 The wine has immense depth of flavour with the characteristic Barossa Valley richness, 
 softness and elegance. To allow the wine to reach full potential extended cellaring is 
 recommended.

Shiraz has been excelling in Young for years. Grove Estate has joined
leading maker Clonakilla in establishing the credentials of the red volcanic
loams of the Hilltops district as top Shiraz country.

This 2006 Reserve Shiraz, with a dash of co-fermented Viognier, follows on
from the multi-trophy winning Grove Estate Shiraz wines of the past three years.
It opens with an opulent aroma of ripe fruit: plums, black cherries
and classic Shiraz spice. The palate is all class: fresh, mouth filling flavours,
silky tannins building to a prolonged, velvety finish.

  other gold medal winners were all $35+ wines! We were just pipped in the taste off for the 
  trophy by Yering Station Reserve Shiraz-Viognier (but received the same point score).

JaJa Barossa Shiraz 2004 ($29.99) screwcap: Near-perfect expression of Barossan shiraz. 
 Dense, black, silken, overwhelmingly generous and yet laced with fine, steely tannin - 
 this wine ain't about to run away anytime soon. Chocked with black, coal-like, slightly 
 brandied fruit, its mocha-like oak is tucked firmly into the fruit's embrace - this is a very 
 satisfying red wine. It deserves to make a mark as one of the new Barossa reds to look out for - 
 the price, too, is ten dollars per bottle less than it could be.

REVIEWED OCTOBER 2005. Cork had almost nil staining - 1/8 to 1/4 inch, great.
 Distinctive berry , spice, white pepper and one would expect a class wine to follow.
 Lovely sweet wood, very youthful, robust but well balanced with extreme good length,
 definitive white pepper finish which lingered sip by sip over a long evening.
 Not many consumers get the chance to experience superbly aged reds.
 When you taste a well cellared wine, you would not be paying $30 for current release.

 at 12.5 degrees C. and 55% humidity, and is in pristine condition.
 The full and complex palate had ripe Shiraz flavours, integrated oak tannins
 and a well balanced finish when initially tasted, vanillin oak complexity and
 a fine backbone of tannin was coupled with soft, mouthfilling fruit flavour,
 to provide a long, lingering finish. In 2000, this wine, a preferred Vintage,
 displayed a powerfully concentrated palate with dark berry/aniseed flavours and
 velvet textured tannins.

 Comes off 50 year old vines, only the very best of the shiraz

 on the planet which produce the grapes giving an ultra richness

 King Valley is high up in the Victorian Alps, a relatively cool place to
 grow shiraz, which is why this one bristles with mineral character
 and spicy fruit. It's a tough young wine, resinous and black, well
 worth cellaring for a year or two to best appreciate the wine's distinctive

 "The cool vineyards of the King Valley are beginning to exert their
 influence in the minds of the Australian wine-drinking public. While
 the King Valley is gaining recognition for its ability to produce some
 of the best examples of Italian varietals in the country, it is also the
 home of some pretty special shiraz vineyards. The Redbank Shiraz
 is a lovely wine with some deep rich flavours and a hint of cool climate
 complexity. Mulberry fruit and mint combine with a spicy
 finish to make a very well-balanced wine. It has none of the sweet
 jammy flavours of warmer regions, but it's not lean and astringent
 either, just a well-rounded cool-climate red, perfect for the roast."

 Tim Burvill, who left the security of the Penfolds red-winemaking 
 team long before the recent eruptions to do his own thing, has hit 
 the jackpot with the 2002 RockBare Shiraz (90 points, $15; cellar to 2012). 
 “It might turn out to be the best vintage of my life,” he says. “The wine 
 seemed to make itself.” Deeply coloured, it is laden with rich, ripe luscious 
 blackberry and plum fruit, supported by deftly handled and understated French oak. 
 It is almost certain the 90 points of today will be closer to 94 points in five

 Winemaker’s Notes: A deep, dark red/black colour with vibrant crimson 
 hues introduces this wine. Intense aromas of black berry, spice, liquorice 
 and chocolate, supported by coffee bean/cedar oak fill the nose. On the 
 rich, full-bodied palate there is ripe, spicy varietal fruit and coffee bean French 
 oak complexed by wonderful savoury flavours. The palate has power and weight, 
 showing a firm texture and finely grained tannins in a very long, drying finish.

 We made short work of our tasting sample - not a drop left. 14.5% alcohol
 for a Barossa hinted we were onto a top producer. Rich elegant, quality 
 throughout from nose to a lingering memory. Nose of ripe cherries, rich 
 spices and licorice with some vanillin undertones derived from the extended 
 maturation in select new and old American oak. On the palate the flavours 
 explode in a fusion of complex oak and well integrated tannins with a backbone 
 if rich black plums. A focus on quality rewards the consumer with a wine 
 showing the best of Barossa Shiraz . Very moreish 5/6.

 Faith could be named after a Lutheran school in the Barossa, or 
 chief winemaker Stuart Blackwell's wife. It doesn't matter. What 
 it stands for is great value for money… The 2006 is even more seductive 
 than usual - it was a very good year. Bright raspberry and blueberry 
 fruit aromas are joined on the palate by anise and mixed spices. 
 There are lashings of flavour and supple tannins. It's gently oaked
 compared with the more expensive St Hallett shirazes, Blackwell and Old Block. 
 This is a terrific buy, even at the full price. Drinks well now and will 
 continue to for at least six years. Food: Steak and kidney pie; Barossa mettwurst; 
 casseroled and braised meats including lamb shanks and osso bucco.

 Tait has been establishing a track record for hedonistically rendered wines 
 at friendly prices for several years. Previous vintages of this wine have been 
 smash hits and the 2006 The Ball Buster is a lock to continue this trend. 
 It is a 15,000 case cuvee, all of which was Basket Pressed, a labour-intensive 
 process not commonly associated with a wine in this price category. The wine 
 is composed of 78% 

Shiraz

, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot aged 12 months 
 in used French and American oak. Purple coloured, it exhibits a classy bouquet 
 of cedar, earth, tar, espresso, blueberry, blackcurrants, and licorice. Supple, 
 ripe and soft on the palate, this seamless crowd pleaser of a wine can be enjoyed 
 now and over the next several years. It is an awesome value.

 A rich deep red colour with crimson hues, an inky and concentrated wine with 
 cooler climate of southern Margaret River giving the wine a tight structure to 
  the ripe and complex dark fruits. Hints of bitter chocolate, peppery and brambly 
tarry berries and well-knit oak provide for a big mouthful. This wine will develop

 We just tasted the newly released Water Wheel 2006 Shiraz from 
 Bendigo Victoria - fabulous, GOLD already. You may recall the great
 2004 vintage and maybe some will remember our rejection of the 2005.
 At the same time, we were offered the Water Wheel 2006 MEMSIE Shiraz
 Malbec Cabernet and it stood out as exceptional value. We realised 
 the 2006 shiraz component was the secret to the MEMSIE and we therefore
 highly expected the Water Wheel 2006 Shiraz when released would be a ripper!!!
 RIGHT ON CUE.

 “We’ve sung the praises of this label many times before, and its consistency and 
 quality continues. This is a big, rich wine, but it’s not hot and heavy. The

 Tony Ramunno is no wide-eyed romantic with a vineyard. He can't afford to be.
 He's from Rockbank, a slip of flat, volcanic red soil on the way to Melton 
 that few wine lovers inside Victoria, let alone Australia, associate with wine.
 Well, all that might just change from today.
 The Ramunno family's Witchmount Estate is now recognised internationally for 
 its shiraz, the 2004 vintage being named the top shiraz in the world in the 
 Syrah du Monde wine competition held in France.
 The results of the competition, now in its third year and open exclusively to 
 shiraz or (as the French say) "syrah" wines, were sent to Witchmount Estate 
 early yesterday.
 Suddenly, Rockbank was on the wine map, and Ramunno was ecstatic. He knows that 
 in the minds of wine drinkers Rockbank is no Yarra Valley."Everyone tends to 
 naturally associate a good wine-growing area with a better socio-economic area," he says. 
 And, it might be added, perhaps a prettier one. Rockbank is flat as a tabletop, 
 extremely windy - "We manufacture the wine here," quips Ramunno, as if defying the 
 elements - and less green and undulating than visitors expect. But it's obviously 
 good for shiraz.
 Witchmount Estate world-conquering 2004 shiraz is sourced from three blocks of 
 shiraz grown at the Rockbank vineyard that the Ramunno family planted in 1991. 
 Grapes from each block are kept separate when they are picked, and they are then 
 tasted and blended; sometimes there are rejections.
 In 2004, a year Ramunno recalls was notable for its long Indian summer, the Witchmount 
 winemaker Steve Goodwin ended up rejecting 36% of the shiraz.
 Only the best grapes were kept for that year's vintage, and the wine is still out 
 in the marketplace - 
 The only other Australian wine to make the top 10 listing in the Syrah de Monde tasting 
 was the Taylors St Andrews 2002 shiraz from South Australia's Clare Valley. It is a 
 proven wine performer and medal magnet that sells for $60 a bottle.It was placed seventh

 We, John and Robyn rated this wine (1/8/2007) a Moreish factor of 
 6 out of 6 and one would think that is a perfect score - well it was. 
 We are both proud of our palate. 
 A magnificent wine deserving of it's Gold and 3 Silver Medals. 
 Dense vibrant colour, pepper spice and berry fruit nose following 
 through to a rich palate with notes of vanillan oak balanced with 
 fine tannins and ripe fruit. Soft round complex and great length. 
 14.5% alcohol. Moreish 6/6
