A EXPLANATORY NOTE ON CHAMPAGNE CRU'S
You might recall that in one of my e-mails on Champagne I mentioned that
some producers carried the title Premier Cru and Grand Cru, but that I could
not tell you exactly what this meant.
The story is that when the Champagne appellation was created the district
was divided into 324 areas (each called a cru) which could produce grapes
that could legally be turned into Champagne. Of these 324 crus 43 were
given the right to call their Champagnes "Premier Cru" and 17 "Grand Cru".
This label can only be carried if 100% of the grapes in the Champagne come
from the appropriate Cru. If, for example, even 1% of the "Grand Cru"
grapes are substituted by "Premier Grapes" then that Champagne can only be
classed as a Premier Cru Champagne.
This is very strict, as the Premier and Grand Cru areas are quite small, and
only a few relatively small producers actually use the labels. This is why
(to my knowledge) none of the very large houses actually use the labels
"Premier Cru" and "Grand Cru" on their bottles; there are simply not enough
grapes from those areas to make the quantities necessary.
Historically these Premiere and Grand Cru areas are considered to produce
the best grapes (and therefore command premium prices) and by extension
these should yield the best Champagnes. Whether this is actually the case
is debatable. Those entitled (and able) to use the labels will tell you
that of course their Champagnes are superior, but very few actually price
their Champagnes accordingly, so I guess there is more to it than that.
Significantly, neither Dom Perignon nor Roederer Cristal (nor from
recollection other major prestige brands) use those labels. (D Scorpecci, Paris)

The 2005 release has been blended from reserve wines from six vintages,
including vintage 2000 (41%), 1999 (21%), 1998 (16%), 1997 (15%), 1996 (5%)
and 1995 (2%).
The base blend was put together and matured in well seasoned French oak for
48 months and then tiraged (sparkled) in February 2003. The wine was again
matured in bottles on yeast lees for 24 months to gain softness and complexity
followed by disgorging in February 2005. Mature vintage port and concentrated
grape juice was used to sweeten the final wine, (the liqueuring). Rich and complex
with blackcurrant, blackberry and sweet earth mature Coonawarra Cabernet
characters, this wine is ready to drink on release, however it will gain complexity
and softness with careful cellaring. Drink very cold during summer as a refreshing
start to any meal. *****
